NOTES ON 8086 PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE An 8088 is just an 8086 with an 8-bit external bus. The stack pointer points to the last item pushed; a push decrements the stack pointer before storing. Hence it's OK for SP to point to the byte AFTER the top of the stack. The register model of the 8086 is rather asymmetrical. There are eight 16-bit registers: AX = AH AL (DS:) BX = BH BL CX = CH CL DX = DH DL (SS:) BP (DS:) SI (ES:) DI (SS:) SP The 8086 has 20 address lines (1MB address space). Addresses are formed by taking a 16-bit segment register, shifting it left 4 bits, and adding an offset. The segment registers are CS (code), SS (stack), DS (data) and ES (extra). The table above shows the default segment used for indexed instructions; this can be overridden by a segment prefix (e.g. "seg es") CX has special powers as a loop counter; DX is used for to give addresses in I/O space. String instructions use DS:SI as source and ES:DI as destination.
